Build a sourced country-research file

Keep your question, source and review date together instead of accumulating disconnected browser tabs.

Write the research question first

‘Is this country good?’ is too broad. Choose a question about work language, registration, housing in a city or a route relevant to your circumstances. Do not equate a national average with your own outcome.

Separate information, interpretation and uncertainty

Save information from an official page with its URL. Keep your interpretation separate. If the source’s relevance to your nationality, profession or family situation is unclear, leave that as an open question. Do not present an old check date as current.

Compare using the same questions

Apply the same set to two countries, while checking that answers have comparable detail. Do not fill missing information with invented values. A research file does not produce a visa decision or automatic country ranking.

Turn reading into an output

  1. Choose three concrete questions for a country.
  2. Add a source and date beside each note.
  3. Keep unanswered points marked as open questions.
